"The Wave" on the shore of a Danish fjord
The Wave residential complex in the Danish port town of Veille, on the shore of the fjord of the same name, began to be built in 2006. With its five distinctive wave crests, the "Wave" in Veille appears as a sculptural image, complete with five crests that run like a wave along the waterfront, challenging their location.
The Wave was designed as a new landmark for the city and includes a public promenade. The recognizable shape of the building tries to connect the residential area with the sea, the landscape and the city. The wave takes its shape from the images of the area: the fjord, the bridge, the city and the hills.
By 2008, only two of the five towers were completed; the works were stopped due to the economic crisis and resumed only in 2015. and it has been several years since Henning Larsen Architects announced the completion of the project. Even in its partially realized form, "The Wave" has won several notable architectural awards and has become important for the city.
The unusual shape of the building, according to the architects' idea, refers to the hilly landscape, which is not typical for Denmark, but is specific to these places. And the obvious use of the motif of the water element turns the object on the coast into a kind of mediator between nature and the city.
The total area of the complex is 14,000 square meters, it has 100 apartments, five towers, each tower has nine floors, the highest of which is a double-height, two-story penthouse apartment. The buildings are clad in white terracotta ventilated rain cover panels, which essentially define the wave movement. At the same time, this shell forms a canopy that protects the interior and the actively projecting balconies. Along the entire long front, a well-maintained promenade and pier provide access to the water and are responsible for the social component of the entire project.
