A building for all occasions in life

The Matrix ONE office and laboratory building within the framework of the MVRDV project was opened in the Amsterdam Science Park. It is designed for future functionality changes, minimal resource consumption, and end-of-use recycling of its own components.

The six-story building with a total area of 13,000 m2 is the main building of the Matrix Innovation Center, located in the Science Park in the southeast of Amsterdam. The main innovation of his project is the calculation of the subsequent dismantling of this building and the recycling of more than 90% of its components and materials. 120 thousand components can be useful again. materials are divided into categories depending on the service life: for furniture it is the shortest, for precast concrete floors - the longest.

Metal frames and concrete slabs can be taken apart and reused. nothing here is fixed once and for all. Thus, instead of the traditional layer of poured concrete on the prefabricated floors, metal reinforcements were used underneath them. The aluminum front parts are screwed directly onto the wooden base.

No less attention is paid to future reconstruction and changes. If desired, offices and laboratories can be modified, expanded and reduced as desired. All internal walls can be moved and removed. The floor covering is continuous and uniform throughout the building, so these changes will not leave a sloppy footprint. Plus, it's 95% organic and fairly easy to replace.

The project makes extensive use of natural light, but automatic shutters prevent the sun from overheating the interior. The roof is improved and therefore also protects against heat, there are also installed 1000 m2 of solar panels. There is a heat pump and ventilation system with heat recovery. A special application for employees' smartphones and sensors makes it possible to use all systems only when they are really needed. Green walls and indoor indoor plants (designed by MVRDV Architects of UP Architecture) improve air quality

The elevators are specially hidden deep in the atrium so that employees can move more when using the stairs. A large, convenient and visible "garage" for bicycles serves the same purpose.
