Earthquake resistance of modern buildings in Armenia
The seismic resistance of modern buildings in Armenia has increased significantly compared to the Soviet period, all this is primarily due to the significant tightening of national standards for earthquake-resistant construction.
The territory of Armenia is divided into three zones according to seismic risk. The capital Yerevan is located in the third danger zone.
According to preliminary estimates, it can be said that 20% of the 4,800 multi-apartment buildings in Yerevan are unsuitable for operation in terms of seismic resistance.
Each violation of earthquake-resistant construction standards entails unpredictable consequences. Of particular concern to specialists are alterations carried out by citizens in apartments on their own: alteration or demolition of partitions and capital load-bearing walls.
Advice to our national population: do not assume the functions of a builder and do not carry out construction interventions in the apartment yourself.
